8 Week Positive Mental Health Foundations Program for Girls 10-15 years

We all want our kids to be fulfilled, confident and competent adults that lead happy and purposeful lives; and the years that are foundational for this outcome are also the most challenging and troublesome years of our lives, the teenage years.

We have condensed the essential skills, positive mental health habits and life principles into an experiential and practical program that will not only give your young person a Rock-Solid foundation in which to build their life upon, but also help them and you as parents avoid the common mental health and behavioural issues that develop during adolescence.

This program was developed through our experience in supporting teens and young adults with serious mental health issues that could have been avoided if parents had a pro-active understanding of the needs of their teen, before the problems occurred or during early development.

Overview and Objectives

The Empowered Girls program is a preventative and proactive program that focuses on key areas that promote positive social interaction and encourages self-awareness and confidence for young girls to grow into their authentic self. The sessions incorporate exploring the fundamentals for developing and maintaining positive mental health.

 

 

Objectives

Practical Growth

The program is designed around 6 critical stages of group formation and naturally gives the girls real life experiences in a controlled and guided environment. These 6 stages and the activities designed for each week of the program allow individuals to gain experience and skills in:

  • Building positive self-esteem
  • Understanding communication styles
  • Developing self-awareness and emotional awareness
  • Recognising self-talk (builders and shredders)
  • Teamwork: Understanding others, working together and acknowledging our own strengths
  • Problem solving

 

 

Interactive & Engaging

A tailored approach

The program is dynamic and intentionally challenging to the participants which gives each group member a balanced learning experience covering both theory and practical concepts. It is designed to actively engage participants that may normally struggle with traditional learning environments such as the school class room; and each weekly session incorporates a journal reflection for continued learning and discussion at home.

For the parents, you will also receive a weekly session outline that gives you talking points and strategies to further support your child’s learning long after the program is completed. We see this as critical to both reinforcing the learning experience for their young person but also further enhancing the new positive habits that have been established in their lives.

It is also designed to support parents in developing greater independence in their child and to give them some practical tools to allow them to take responsibility for their choices and behaviours as they grow into young women.

 

 

Additional Content

For Teen Parents

As part of this program, we also include a “Raising Teens” parent information and strategy session. This is a two-hour evening session designed to give you tools and strategies for confidently parenting your teen. During this session, we will also discuss the program progress and give opportunity to look at what the girls are learning in greater detail. This is a great opportunity for you to ask specific questions on issues you might be facing in your household. The foundations from the program can be utilised in tackling parenting and family dynamics.

The mental health habits and concepts that will be covered over the 8 weeks are:

Week 1 – The importance of setting boundaries

Week 2 – Understanding communication 

Week 3 – Identifying self-talk (builders and shredders)

Week 4 – Building confidence and exploring our strengths

Week 5 – Developing an attitude of gratitude & mindfulness

Week 6 – What you put in is what you get back – ‘The Attitude Boomerang’

Week 7 – Problem solving

Week 8 – Putting it all together & who am I now?

Week 8 is where we bring all of the lessons and activities to conclusion and have the girls look forward with purpose for the future. And this is a time that we would invite you to join us for a small supper and celebration with an opportunity to reflect over the past 8 weeks and the experiences they have had together.  This reflection is also designed to once again reinforce the confidence and self-esteem growth that would have occurred during the program and for the girls to take the time to acknowledge this growth.  More details on this will be given to you as the program progresses.
